The camera also features Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), 6 scene SR AUTO recognition, Motion Panorama mode with auto stitch, HDTV-compatible Photos & Video and Auto image rotation in playback.

The Fujifilm FinePix S4000 features a body designed to look reminiscent to that of an SLR, although it’s actually a fixed-lens camera. Based around a 14 megapixel image sensor, the front panel of the S4000 bears a Super EBC Fujinon-branded 30x optical zoom lens. The S4000′s lens offers actual focal lengths from 4.3 to 129.0mm, which equates to 35mm-equivalent focal lengths ranging from a generous 24mm wide angle to a whopping 720mm telephoto. Maximum aperture varies from f/3.1 at wide angle to f/5.9 at telephoto. The image sensor allows capture of not only high-resolution still images, but also of high-definition 720p video at a rate of 30 frames per second. Given the extreme telephoto reach, mechanical image stabilization is obviously a necessity to fight blur from camera shake, and the Fuji FinePix S4000 includes sensor shift stabilization. There’s no true optical viewfinder on this model, with images and movies being framed and reviewed either on an electronic viewfinder of unspecified resolution, or on a 3.0-inch LCD display with 460,000 dots of resolution.

The main attraction of the Fuji Finepix S4000 is its 30x optical zoom lens. This is one of the longest lenses currently available. It gives you plenty of scope for zooming in on distant subjects. When you take photos with a lens of this length a problem that can occur is picture blur caused by camera shake. This is where you are unable to hold the camera perfectly still while you are taking a photo. To help combat this Fuji have built image stabilisation into the Finepix S4000.

In use, it proves easy-to-use and adaptable, delivering images of a consistently good, if not quite exceptional, quality. The Fujifilm F550 EXR is certainly worth a look if you are in the market for a travel or advanced-level compact.

It’s not every day that I can recommend a camera based on a combination of use, price and features–usually I ride the fence on most every camera, issuing tepid recommendations and the occasional wag of a mildly disapproving finger. But the FujiFilm JZ300 is a different creature, and well worth recommending.

One of four new J-series compacts announced by Fujifilm in February 2010, the FinePix JZ300 is a 12 Megapixel super-zoom with a 10x optical range,6x digital zoom and 2.7in screen. It can shoot HD video at 720p resolution at 24 frames per second and, what’s more, you can use the optical zoom while shooting video. Available in black or silver, the JZ300 has the look and feel of a serious camera. With its metal casing and rounded corners it looks stylish enough, but you won’t find any frivolous colours in the range and, while it’s a handsome, sturdy camera, if you’re looking for a fashion accessory this isn’t it. It’s a very comfortable camera to hold and use. Your fingers wrap around the right side with the Fujifilm and 10x zoom badges on the front providing good purchase – not that your really need them as the matt metal casing is very grippable. The natural resting place for your thumb is bang in the middle of the mode dial on the rear panel which is fine, but you do need to take care that you don’t inadvertently move it off your selected setting.

There are a lot of low cost digital cameras on the market; you see them in supermarkets and mail-order catalogues all the time, and if you’re sensible you’ll avoid them, or at least the vast majority of them. Most of them are cheap plastic tat, manufactured in some anonymous Chinese factory and imported under any one of half-a-dozen brand names. However there are a couple of exceptions: some of the big-name manufacturers also have budget-priced ranges to cater to the supermarket and catalogue trade, and one or two of these cameras are not too bad.

One such manufacturer is Fujifilm, which along with its professional DSLRs, feature-packed super-zoom bridge cameras and advanced compacts also has its J-series of stripped-down, cut-priced compact cameras. The last one I looked at was the FinePix J10, back in May of last year. The J10 is still available, but Fujifilm has nonetheless launched the J12, which I’m looking at today.
The J12 is very similar to the J10 in many ways. It is exactly the same weight and virtually the same size. As far as I can tell it shares exactly the same body, although according to the spec sheet the J12 is actually 3mm thicker. Unfortunately I don’t have the J10 around for a direct comparison, so I’ll have to take their word for it.

Using a powerful Fujinon 10x zoom lens, Fijifilm claims that no matter what the setting, the lens depicts what the eye sees. Enabled with Super CCD EXR, a 3 stage sensor employing Fine Capture (high resolution), Pixel Fusion (High Sensitivity & Low Noise), Dual Capture (Wide Dynamic Range) technologies for superior picture quality. The F80EXR boasts 12- megapixels of resolution for large size prints. The high contrast 3.0-inch LCD gives you a nice large viewing area for framing your shots and playing them back. Keeping the images sharp is aided by Fujifilm’s Dual Image Stabilization, which brings together FinePix sensitivity to stabilize motion blur and CCD-Shift image stabilization compensates for camera shake.
