The P300’s low-light, high-speed and multiple-exposure shooting modes all have their uses and are capable of good results when used with due care. That said, it does lose points for not being able to record lossless Raw images. Ideally, we’d liked to have seen smoother and more precise zoom controls too, along with a wider choice of aspect ratios.

The Nikon Coolpix P300 is a new pocket compact camera designed to appeal to the keen enthusiast photographer. The P300’s most obvious competitors are the Canon PowerShot S95, Panasonic LX5 and the Olympus XZ-1, but unlike all of those models the P300 has a 35% smaller 1/2.3” Back Side Illuminated CMOS sensor with 12.2 megapixels. The Nikon P300 also features a mechanically-stabilized 4.2x optical zoom with a focal range of 24-100mm and maximum apertures of f/1.8-4.9, sensitivity range of ISO 160 to 3200, PASM shooting modes, full 1080p HD video recording with stereo sound, 7 continuous shots at eight frames per second, and a 3-inch 920,000-dot LCD screen. The Nikon Coolpix P300 is available in black.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR Features
Nikon Silent Wave Motor: A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.

M/A Focus Mode Switch: When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring—M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.

Aspherical Lens Element: Since the 1960s, aspherical lenses have been an important part of the NIKKOR lens family. Virtually eliminating coma and other types of aberration, every new addition to the lineup provides a new level of contrast, resolution and compact design.

Super Integrated Coating: Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced lens flare.

Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR Features

Close-Range Correction: Using Nikon’s innovative floating element design, each lens group moves independently to achieve focus providing high performance at both near and far distances.

Super Integrated Coating: Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced lens flare.

As the variety and quantity of “travel zoom” compacts grows, kicked off in earnest by Panasonic’s TZ series a couple of years back and now sporting everything from Full HD video and GPS to 3D shooting, it was about time Nikon pimped its Coolpix series and emerged with its own “small camera, big zoom” contender. Not much has changed since our visit last Fall with the Coolpix S8100, and that’s because Nikon’s follow-up to the S8000 was a significant improvement. It’s now edging along the crest of Spring and the Nikon Coolpix S9100 has already been unleashed to replace the S8100, which still seems wet behind the ears.

At first glance the S9100 is slickly styled like a high end enthusiasts’ compact complete with top plate mode dial, sunken flash and stereo microphones. But while there is a smattering of creative options here, it’s pretty much an ‘auto everything’ point-and-shoot model. If you do truly want everything in the one package, what it lacks to make it top dog in the travel zoom stakes is built-in GPS – and possibly a toughened shock dampening chassis – but then again that would add £50 to £100 to the price tag. For those users who don’t require a whole host of features but who nevertheless see the value in a broader than average focal range, the Nikon Coolpix S9100 can hold its head, or rather lens, up amongst the industry leading Panasonic TZ models of this world. The price is fair, and for what’s being asked the performance is fair too.

The Coolpix S9100 is Nikon’s third travel-zoom camera, featuring an extended 18x zoom lens with a very versatile focal range of 25-450mm. Other key features of the slim S9100 include a 12 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, high resolution 921k dot 3 inch LCD screen, full 1080p high-definition movies with stereo sound, sensor-shift Vibration Reduction, a shooting mode dial and a fast auto-focus system. The Nikon Coolpix S8100 also offers a range of special effects, in-camera HDR imaging and advanced Night Landscape and Portrait modes. Available in three colours, black, silver and pink, the Nikon Coolpix S9100 costs £299.99 / €348.00 / $329.95.

Nikon COOLPIX S9100 Features

Replacing the P100 which offered a mere 26x zoom, it just nudges ahead of its chief competitor, the PowerShot SX30 IS, by virtue of offering a gargantuan 36x optical reach (to the Canon’s ‘paltry’ 35x). Accompanying this mammoth zoom is a 12.1 megapixel back illuminated CMOS sensor, which should theoretically provide greater low light effectiveness. Other competitors include the Fujifilm HS10 and newly introduced FinePix HS20 plus the existing Olympus SP800 UZ, all of which offer 30x zoom.

Nikon Coolpix P500 is a 12.1 Megapixel CMOS Digital Camera features 36x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom-NIKKOR ED Glass Lens, ISO 160×3200, Full HD (1080p) Movie with Stereo sound and HDMI Output, 5-way VR Image Stabilization System, 0.24 in. TFT LCD, approx. 230,000 dot with diopter adjustment. The camera measures (H x W x D) (3.3 in. (83.7mm) x 4.6 in. (115.5mm) x 4.1 in. (102.5mm)) and weight 17.5 oz. (494g). Designed to appeal to amateur photographers who want an easy-to-carry camera that can cover most subjects and shooting situations, the Coolpix P500 is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It is offered in two colours: traditional black and a very smart deep red.

Its feature set and pricing mean that it sits very comfortably between the beginner-friendly D3100 and the high-end D7000 - it’s clearly aimed to attract the attention of enthusiast photographers without cannibalizing sales of is sister models.

A camera maker can judge the success of its market positioning by seeing how many people are wondering ‘which model is right for me?’ on discussion forums – and we think a D3100/D5100/D7000 progression would minimize such doubts. The official line is that the D90 maintains its position in the range, but both its naming and overlap with other models suggest that its role is now more one of historical interest than future significance.

When a 5x zoom isn’t enough and a 10x zoom is too much, there are the likes of the 7x zoom Nikon Coolpix S6000. Combined with its 28mm-equivalent wide-angle starting point, you get an extra bit of flexibility in a pocketable body that does make a difference, especially when there’s just no physical way to get closer. Add in this camera’s relatively speedy shooting performance and you have a decent, well-priced compact camera for shooting from the sidelines. It’s still a compact point-and-shoot, though, so despite its high resolution and Nikkor ED glass lens, the photos are best enjoyed at smaller sizes as prints or for online sharing with little to no cropping or enlarging.

The Nikon Coolpix S6000 is a sleek, user-friendly compact ultrazoom camera with a surprisingly long 7x optical zoom (a 35mm equivalent lens range of 28mm to 196mm). It occupies the middle ground between standard ultracompact point-and-shoot cameras with 3x or 4x optical zoom, such as Nikon’s own S4000, and compact ultrazooms with 10x optical zoom and higher, such as Nikon’s S8000.
