If we take a look back to the year 2009, Samsung has started to design cameras with similar feature where they designed a dual LCD screen-equipped camera named Samsung ST550 then followed by the Samsung PL120 & PL170 later which is also targeted for people looking for a camera for taking self-portrait easily.

The Samsung TL320 also known as Samsung WB100 or WB1000 is a technically advanced camera with a lot of useful and interesting features. Its basic specification compares well with rival compacts, with a 12.2 megapixel CCD sensor, a 5x zoom f/2.8-5.6 Schneider Kreuznach lens with a zoom range equivalent to 24-120mm and optical image stabilisation, and a new three-inch high resolution AMOLED monitor. It offers HD video recording with stereo sound recording, full manual exposure and HDMI output.

It’s hard to think of any recent cameras from other manufacturers with which to compare the WB1000. While it’s not quite up to the exalted level of advanced cameras such as the Canon G11 or Panasonic LX3 it’s certainly head and shoulders above most point-and-shoot compacts. Perhaps a fair comparison might be the Panasonic FX550 which also features a 5x zoom lens and manual exposure. It is also about the same price, retailing at around £220-230 depending on where you look.

It has to be said though that the WB1000 is not the most attractive camera in the world. The design of the body is obviously derived from Samsung’s NV series compacts such as the NV100HD, and even incorporates the novelty analogue dials for battery life and memory card capacity previously seen on the NV9. It solidly made with a strong metal body and well mounted recessed controls, and is available in either black or the brushed metal finish seen here. The WB1000 is surprisingly compact considering its ambitious specification, measuring 97 x 61 x 21mm and weighing 184g including battery and card. The design incorporates a textured handgrip on the front and a strap lug that doubles as a thumb grip on the back, and the camera handles well, however the proportions of the body do look rather ungainly and the mis-matched textures look a bit scrappy.

There are over a dozen main manufacturers, dozens more minor ones, and nearly all of them have an extensive range of models, giving the poor bewildered consumer hundreds of different cameras to choose from, in many cases almost the only variation between them being the brand name on the front. Manufacturers are continually trying to come up with new features to give their cameras a unique selling point and an edge over the competition.

The Samsung PL150 (also known as the TL210) is a new 12 megapixel point and shoot camera with a twist – it has a second 1.5 inch LCD screen on the front which makes it much easier to take self-portrait pictures and videos. As part of this DualView system the PL150 also offers a large 3 inch rear LCD screen, plus there’s a 5x , 27-135mm lens, 720p high-definition video recording, and a clever Smart Auto mode which automatically chooses from 16 different scene settings. The Samsung PL150 / TL210 is available in black with red or blue highlights

Samsung is, as we’ve noted before, the world’s largest technology company, and has huge resources for innovation, design and manufacturing. As a result it can employ blitzkrieg tactics, flooding any particular market with a huge range of well-specified, well made models at temptingly low prices. It has done this with the digital camera market, fielding a range of models that includes digital SLRs, it’s innovative new NX micro system and no less than 35 compact cameras. The tactic clearly works, because Samsung is now ranked third in the global compact camera market, and is rapidly catching up with Canon and Panasonic.

Typical of Samsung’s range is this TL110 (also known as ST60). It features a high quality 5x zoom lens equivalent to 27-135mm, a 14.2-megapixel sensor, a 2.7-inch 230k LCD monitor, 720p HD video and optical image stabilisation, all wrapped up in a slim and stylish all-metal body. Its a decent camera by any standard, but its specification is so similar to the ST60 and ST50 that even Samsung’s own website has got them mixed up. Its closest rival is probably the Panasonic FS11, which has a virtually identical specification. Also comparable is the excellent Casio EX-Z2000.

While it’s easy to be cynical about Samsung’s marketing tactics there’s no question that it can make a good product. The ST70 is slim lightweight and attractive, measuring just 96.3 x 55.8 x 21.5mm and weighing 137g fully loaded. The build quality is excellent, with a good fit between panels and well-mounted controls. The battery/card hatch even has a strong metal hinge and a locking latch, although the tripod bush is unfortunately made of plastic. The ST70 is available in turquoise metallic blue, brown or the anodised silver finish shown here.

The largely point-and-shoot PL70 also features a large 3 inch LCD screen, optical image stabilisation, ISO 3200, Smart Auto Mode, Blink and Smile Detection, and Samsung’s Perfect Portrait System which includes a Beauty Shot mode. For keen movie-makers, there’s a 720p HD movie capture with Pause and Re-record functionality and HDMi connectivity. Available in red, pink, black and silver

Constructed out of robust plastic with a metallic finish and shiny silver detailing, the Samsung PL70 is a fairly stylish if somewhat chunky compact camera. This is mainly due to its 5x optical zoom lens, which extends to provide a 28-140mm focal length, versatile enough for anything from landscapes to candid head and shoulder portraits. The PL70 does have a few similarly-sized rivals that provide an even bigger zoom range though, most notably the Panasonic TZ series.

Although it hasn’t got an ‘HD’ suffix in the model name, as indicated in our introduction the Samsung PL70 nevertheless offers High Definition video clips, though at 1280×720 pixels rather than the Full HD 1920×1080. In what Samsung is claiming as a first for digital compacts in its class, these can be paused mid-recording then re-started. The user can therefore perform rudimentary ‘editing’ as they shoot, a clever idea that hasn’t yet been picked-up by other manufacturers. Fortunately the full extent of the optical zoom is also accessible when shooting movies.

South Korean industrial giant Samsung is the world’s largest conglomerate corporation, with subsidiaries making everything from satellites to supertankers. This means that its consumer electronics products, including its large and growing range of digital cameras, are made almost entirely from components produced by other branches of the same company, and therefore cost Samsung far less than equivalent cameras made by other companies, who have to buy in components such as LCD monitor screens, Lithium-ion batteries and zoom lenses from third-party suppliers. As a result Samsung is able to turn out relatively high-spec cameras for the price of other brands’ budget models.

Take today’s review camera for example. The PL55 is a mid-range point-and-shoot compact camera featuring a 5x optical zoom lens (equivalent to approximately 35-175mm), a 12.2-megapixel CCD sensor and a 2.7-inch LCD monitor. It has a solidly made all-metal body and is available in black, silver or the Fuchsia pink seen above. The specification may not sound that remarkable, but when you consider the PL55′s price of just £105 it represents a lot of camera for your money.

However while Samsung can do cheap mass production better than almost anyone, its design department still has plenty of room for improvement, and the PL55 has as many bad points as good ones. In some ways it’s very good; the overall build quality is excellent and the styling is attractive and contemporary. It is nice and light, and the smooth rounded shape slips easily into a shirt pocket. However the control layout on the back leaves no room for the thumb, and the shiny gloss finish is very slippery and difficult to grip securely despite the vestigial finger-grip on the front. The LCD monitor is impressively sharp with a good fast refresh rate, but it has a restricted angle of view and is very prone to reflection and glare, making it difficult to see in sunlight.

Samsung PL55/SL502 Specifications

The Samsung SL600 features a 12.2 megapixel image sensor and a Samsung-branded 5x optical zoom lens. The SL600′s lens offers a 27 – 135mm equivalent focal range, a useful wide angle to a moderate telephoto. As you’d expect for an entry-level model, the SL600′s lens lacks true optical image stabilization, with only Digital Image Stabilization available. The Samsung SL600′s DIS function combats blur using the camera’s firmware, automatically raising the camera’s ISO sensitivity (and noise levels) as needed. There’s also no optical viewfinder, with images being framed on a 2.7″ LCD display with 230,000 dot resolution, which equates to around a 320 x 240 pixel array with three dots per color.

The SL600 also includes face detection capability with both smile and blink detection functions, which can be used to automatically capture a photo when everyone’s smiling, and then retake the image if anybody blinks. There’s also a “Beauty Shot” mode which smooths skin tones on detected faces. The face detection is also used to offer a Red-Eye Fix function which automatically locates and corrects for this common image defect. The Samsung SL600 also has a selection of scene modes aimed at keeping things approachable for beginner photographers while still offering a degree of control over images, plus a Smart Auto mode which automatically selects a scene mode as appropriate. The Samsung SL600 also has the ability to record movies in AVI format, at a maximum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, with a framerate of just 30 frames per second max. Power comes from a proprietary lithium-ion battery.
